6 recipes that use only a mug and a microwave

Mugs are not just for cups of tea or coffee anymore – you can now create small, one-person meals (or tasty snacks) any time of the day, using only a mug and a microwave.

French toast
Ingredients
  • 1.5 slices of bread
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons of milk
  • a small amount of butter
  • cinnamon
  • vanilla extract (to taste)
  • Maple syrup to serve
Method
  1. Cut the bread into small cubes
  2. Line the cup with a small amount of butter
  3. Crack the egg into the mug
  4. Add the cinnamon, milk and vanilla extract (if you have a sweet tooth) and blend together with a fork
  5. Add the bread to the mug and smoosh it a bit so that the bread soaks up some of the mixtures
  6. Put your creation in the microwave to cook. Start with 1 minute, then go up in 10-second increments until your French toast is cooked just the way you like.
  7. Add the maple syrup to serve
Banana bread 
Ingredients
  • Non-stick cooking spray
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 1.5 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of brown sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teas vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp milk
  • 1 ripe banana, mashed
Method
  1. Spray your chosen mug with cooking spray
  2. Add sugar, salt, flour, baking powder, and baking soda to the mug
  3. Add the egg to the dry ingredients and combine
  4. Mix in the oil, milk, , mashed banana and vanilla to the mug
  5. Place the mug in the microwave for cooking, it should be about 3 minutes but don’t be afraid to stop the process and check (you may need to experiment with cooking times depending on your microwave)
  6. leave to cool and enjoy
Cinnamon scroll 
Ingredients

For the cake:

  • 2 tablespoons of apple sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon of buttermilk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup or all-purpose flour
  • 2.5 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 3/4  tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1 dash of nutmeg
  • 1/4 tablespoon of baking powder
  • salt to taste
For the cream cheese icing
  • 1 tablespoon of cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of milk

For the cream cheese icing:

  1. Put all the ingredients in a small bowl
  2. Whisk with a fork until combined and smooth
  3. Set aside

For the cake:

  1. Combine all of the ingredients in the mug
  2. Whisk together with a fork until all of the ingredients are nearly smooth
  3. Place the mug in the microwave and cook for about 1 minute or until cooked (may vary depending on the microwave)
  4. Top with the icing and serve while warm
Meatloaf
Ingredients:
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 tablespoon tomato sauce (and extra to serve to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons oats
  • 1 teaspoon onion soup mix
  • 1/4 pound lean ground beef or mince 
Method:
  1. Combine the milk, sauce, soup and oats  in the mug.
  2. Crumble the cooked meat over the mixture and stir
  3. Place the mug (covered) in the microwave for cooking, about 3 minutes or until the meat is no longer pink
  4. Let cool, add sauce to taste
Chocolate peanut butter mug cake
Ingredients

For the cake

  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • half a teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of flour
  • 3 tablespoons of cocoa powder
  • pinch of salt
  • pinch of baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter
  • 1/2  teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons of cream
Method

For the peanut butter pie mousse

  1. Mix the peanut butter, vanilla and cream cheese together
  2. Fold the cream into the mixture
  3. Add sugar to taste

For the cake

  1. Melt the butter in a separate dish and add the peanut butter
  2. Mix the vanilla, sugar and egg in a mug until well combined
  3. Add the flour, salt, cocoa and baking powder to the mug
  4. Pour the butter/peanut butter mixture into the mug and mix together with a fork
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips
  6. Place the mug in the microwave for cooking, should be about 1-2 minutes, depending on your microwave, or until cooked.
  7. Top with the peanut butter pie mousse
